In The Wake Of The Taliban, India Withdrew Staff From The Kandahar Consulate:
Fighting between the Taliban and Afghan forces has intensified in recent days.
Fighting between the Taliban and
Afghan forces near the Afghan city of Kandahar has prompted India to withdraw
its staff from its consulate in Kandahar.
According to
Reuters, Indian officials have confirmed that all staff at the consulate have
been temporarily recalled to India.
It should be
noted that Taliban attacks have intensified in recent days during the
withdrawal of US and coalition forces from Afghanistan, while the militant
group has also claimed control of several districts in Afghanistan.
On Sunday,
Indian Home Ministry spokesman Arundam Bagchi said in a statement that India
had temporarily withdrawn its Indian staff due to heavy fighting around
Kandahar.
Indian Home Ministry spokesman Arundam Bagchi said |
He said
India was monitoring the situation while the Afghan staff was currently
handling the affairs of the consulate.
Calling for
an end to the violence in Afghanistan, Bagchi said instability in Afghanistan
has a direct impact on the overall security of the region.
According to
a report by Indian broadcaster NDTV, a diplomatic staff of about 50 members
from the Kandahar consulate was called back to India by Indian Air Force
planes.
The report
said that Indian Air Force planes did not use Pakistani airspace on their
return to India.
Indian
officials said on Tuesday that the Indian embassy in Kabul would continue to
function. However, India had instructed its citizens in Afghanistan to exercise
extreme caution and avoid unnecessary travel in the light of the current
situation.
India closed
its consulates in Dzhalal-Abad and Herat in the wake of the Karuna epidemic,
while its consulates in Kandahar and Mazar-e-Sharif are still operational.
The Taliban
claimed on Friday that they had captured 85 percent of Afghanistan, while
efforts were under way to gain control of other areas.
India has
set up consulates in several Afghan cities, which are often criticized by
neighboring Pakistan.
Pakistan's
position has been that Indian consulates in Afghanistan are involved in
anti-Pakistan activities.
However,
India has denied the allegations, saying that the Indian consulates in
Afghanistan are working to promote people-to-people contacts between the two
countries and to build and develop Afghanistan.
