Putin Will Receive Appropriate Response To Ransomware Attack: Biden
US President Joe Biden has said he
will send a message to Russian President Vladimir Putin in response to recent
cyberattacks on US companies and government agencies.
President
Biden has promised to respond strongly to such cyberattacks in the future,
despite having strong ties with Russia. According to the Associated Press (AP),
the case is being seen as a test for them.
Last week,
hundreds of private companies and government agencies' computer systems around
the world were attacked by ransomware.
A group of
hackers running ransomware demanded ڈالر 70 million in cryptocurrency in
exchange for unlocking computer systems infected with ransomware. The demand
was made on Sunday in the Dark Web, allegedly on the Russian-language website
R-Evil Gang. Ransomware is a type of software that allows hackers to take over
computer systems. They take it and then demand ransom for opening it.
Ransomware
attacks have emerged as a major national security challenge for the US
government in recent months. According to the AP, groups linked to Russia have
spent millions of dollars on attacks on key infrastructure and businesses.
According To The White House:
The
ransomware was attacked by software belonging to Cassaya, a software company
based in the US city of Miami. This software is used to work remotely. The
attack comes just weeks after President Biden sent a clear message to Russian
President Vladimir Putin, saying he had run out of patience with Russia over
cyberattacks in the United States. But, according to the AP, President Biden
finds himself in a difficult situation, as the US administration is well aware
that any drastic action against Russia could lead to a series of such moves
between the two countries. And there could be tensions between the world's
major nuclear powers.
Recently,
President Biden told reporters that he would send a message to Putin in this
regard. According to the AP, he did not provide further details.
A White
House National Security Council spokesman said in a statement on Wednesday that
dealing with ransomware attacks was one of the government's priorities, but
that dealing with them, which had been on the rise for years, was not easy.
White House Press Secretary Jane Sackie Said:
White House
Press Secretary Jane Sackie said in a statement on Tuesday that US and Russian
envoys would meet next week. The latest attack by the US administration has not
yet been linked to Russian hackers.
However, the
AP reports that according to cybersecurity experts, the "R Evil Gang"
is responsible for the attack.
It may be
recalled that in April this year, ten officials of the Russian embassy were
ordered to leave the country by the US government on charges of cyber
espionage.
Some of the
material in this report was taken from Reuters and the Associated Press.
