Attacks on US interests continue. Iraq's internal security situation is deteriorating
The Trump administration is unhappy with the threats and attacks on US interests. In this context, Washington has threatened to close the US embassy in Baghdad. This threat could further weaken the faltering government of current Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazmi.
Significantly, Iraq has been embroiled in a tug-of-war between the United States and Iran over the past few years. As a result of US anti-Iran policy, the Baghdad government has been under intense pressure from Washington since 2018. US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo warned of closing the embassy in Iraq. Said during US officials have declined to comment on the Secretary of State's ultimatum. A State Department official in Washington says pro-Iranian armed groups are involved in firing rockets at US targets on Iraqi soil.
Baghdad's high-security Green Zone:
There are a few hundred US diplomats in Baghdad's high-security Green Zone, and 3,000 troops are stationed at three military bases in the rest of the country. Rockets have been fired at these locations since 2019, as well as locally-made explosives. US and Iraqi officials have blamed the pro-Iranian militant group Kateb Hezbollah. The United States has twice attacked Hezbollah's hideouts. Such pro-Iranian armed groups apparently have no political status in the current Iraqi government. A major militant group, Hashad al-Shabi, has also condemned such attacks. Despite all the negotiation and military efforts, Iraqi Prime Minister Mustafa al-Kazmi's government unrest has not ended. He took over as prime minister in May this year, and since then his government has been under constant regional and US pressure. During Al-Kazmi's visit to the United States last August, the host country expressed its concern and called for more action.
